A four-month old baby died after being shaken by one of his parents, a jury has been told.
Ryan Boswell from Shotton, Flintshire, died in January 2005 after suffering injuries consistent with
being shaken, Mold Crown Court heard.
The court was told how one of his parents had caused the injuries but both had lied to police to
prevent the authorities learning the truth.
John Boswell, 22, and Emma Buck, 20, deny perverting the course of justice.
Home Office pathologist Dr Christopher Johnson, who conducted the post mortem examination, told the
jury how the cause of Ryan's death was a head injury consistent with the results of shaking, or
of shaking combined with an impact.
He was found to have damage to the brain, bleeding in the space between the brain and the skull, and
bleeding to the rear of the eyes.
Specialist children's brain surgeon Peter Richards said that Ryan had suffered a severe head
injury.
He added: "One can only conclude that someone or something must have done it to him."
Ryan was born three-months premature and was allowed home on December 13, but after 18 days in his
parents' care he was rushed to hospital on New Year's Day 2005 and died 17 days later.
He was not breathing and there was no heart beat - his heart was started again and he was
transferred to Alder Hey Hospital where he died. The court heard his brain was starved of blood and
oxygen
The prosecution's case is that Ryan died from shaken baby syndrome, and that one of his parents
was responsible for the shaking.
Prosecuter Rhys Rowlands told how Ryan's parents both lied to police to prevent the authorities
from discovering the truth about his death.
He said that between 1 January and 17 February, 2005, they gave police a series of false accounts to
conceal the true details of how he had received his injuries.
I didn't know you darling but I am disgusted by the fact you left this earth at the hands of
your parents, someone who should love and protect you and failed at both.
